I had the great opportunity to work with a pal and former colleague of mine on this one. Director Will Armstrong, once a producer of some of the commercials I directed, got me on board and due, in part to the shorthand we’d developed over the years, flew through it.
For context, one day Will decided to put together a beast of a spec commercial for BMW and the moment he released that baby into the wild, the rest was history.
This square-jawed Motswana continues to produce incredible work and develop his craft to dizzying heights. It was a pleasure to jump back into the trenches with him on ‘Corona Suerte’ and for that I am thankful.
As you’ll see from the final cut of the film below, some ideas evolved and some got cut completely. As is often the way, storyboards can be the best way of deciding what you don’t need to shoot on the day.
2017. Leo Burnett Mexico
As the official sponsor of Mexico’s national football team — and unofficial sponsor of its supporters — Corona wanted to cast its support following the 2018 World Cup draw. Their film isn’t about football and fame, but about Luck, or the lack thereof. Because while the entire country believes Luck plays a major role, when asked, Luck tells us Mexico doesn’t need him. We produced Luck’s story across 10 different sets, including the legendary Azteca Stadium. Also looking after the post-production, we delivered a 60 and 40-second version, amassing and amazing over 20 million viewers in the first month.
